The Lichens of Jersey
In 2015, after ten years of fieldwork with Peter James in the early days and Amanda Davey in the later years, the book The Lichens of Jersey was published with a launch and lecture given in the Société Jersiaise in St Helier, Jersey. This book is fully illustrated, which is rare for a flora of this kind. This is because the lichens of Jersey have played a significant role in the history of the taxonomy of lichens in the world as a result of the considerable work carried out by a Jerseyman, Charles du Bois Larbalestier. A significant proportion of lichen type specimen material comes from Jersey or from Kylemore in Ireland, where Larbalestier was tutor to a son of Mitchell Henry MP.
Humorous natural history travel
Simon Davey's new book, Is No Problem, was published by Brambleby Books in July 2016. It is available from Tilia Publishing UK and other outlets. It is all about the times when travelling, when the natural history tour leader's contact appears with a suspiciously wide grin, proclaiming 'Is no problem!', at which point the tour leader knows that everything is about to go horribly wrong.
Simon Davey's first book, Scilly Birding: Joining the Madding Crowd, was published by Brambleby Books in 2013. It is available from Tilia Publishing UK and other outlets. It is a tale of a novice twitcher and his experiences learning the ropes. It records the author's experiences on his first trip to the Isles of Scilly in the autumn migration in 1984 and is an amusing account of the dynamics of how to 'get your bird', while surrounded by many other booted, tripod-wielding hoards.
Published Material
Simon Davey’s first published article appeared in 1969 in the Entomologists’ Record and was an account of the moths caught in his UV light trap in Barrow on Soar, Leicestershire. After this, he wrote a booklet describing the reserves of the Hampshire and Isle of Wight Naturalists’ Trust in 1971. While working in museums, he wrote a conference abstract of a talk he gave on Biological Recording in a County Museum Service. The Conference took place in Leicester in 1973. He was also asked to write Christchurch in Old Picture Postcards which was published in 1981.
