Birds are nowadays a hobby, although wader counts have been undertaken on estuaries such as the area around the Isle of Sheppey in Kent in the past. Simon Davey takes a great deal of interest in birds when on his many travels to far flung parts of the world, but he uses his binoculars to watch birds and his camera to photograph them. However, birds do feature prominently in his lecturing. One of his more precious memories was getting to know penguins in their native Falkland Islands.
