Public Open Space

Landscape architects and garden designers work on similar
projects , although there can be considerable blurring.
The simplistic view is that garden designers work primarily
on spaces that are private, whereas landscape
architects tend to work on places and spaces viewed
or used by the wider public. The needs and demands
on the spaces are different.

Of course this is far too simplistic, but can be a guide

Dunorlan Park

Public open space goes through phases of popularity and also,
sadly, of funding. Dunorlan Park in Tunbridge Wells was an area
of parkland laid out by Robert Marnock in the nineteenth-century
for the then owner Henry Reed. A series of changes of ownership
and wars led to the council owning the area and it wasn't until 2003
that Heritage Lottery money helped to finance a significant and
highly effective restoration project that changed a forgotten area
into a very popular space. This photograph dates to 2006 and the
opening of the Victoria Cross Grove by Her Royal Highness, the
Princess Royal with the children from local schools dressed smartly
