Citroen DSuper 5 – a classic car
This car was the last of the ID range, replacing the DS21 in Citroën’s DS range in 1972. This car has been the subject of extensive restoration over the last 2 years. A replacement DY3 engine has been fitted giving a D Super specification whilst retaining the 5-speed manual gearbox. The DSuper 5 is the last of the ID range that Citroën introduced subsequent to the DS in 1956. The ID was built as a simpler, less technical variant of the DS as a riposte for those sceptics who had objected to the perceived complication and expense of the DS. Over the years the ID saloon's status gradually increased in terms of trim, equipment and mechanical specification, with the final models having dropped the ID name and being called the DSpécial, the DSuper and the DSuper 5. One fundamental distinction between the DS and ID remained to the end: no ID was ever fitted with the DS braking or semi-automatic transmission, so its brake pedal was always a pendant type and its hydraulic circuitry always followed a simplified layout. This Citroën DSuper 5 could therefore be the preference for drivers more at home with a traditional clutch, gearchange lever and brake pedal arrangement. |
