Spot the difference
Most of us will suffer from bad skin at some stage in
our lives, but for some, acne is an ongoing and unsolvable problem.
Sufferer Claire Brayford tells how she finally found the right treatment to banish her
blemishes forever.
Only an acne sufferer truly understands the impact those angry red marks have on your
life.
Throughout my teens and twenties I have been plagued by spots and only now theyre
history do I realise how much energy they sapped. |

Every morning I would run
to the bathroom in hope that the stubborn little blighters had gone, and at night I would
coat them in ointments dreaming of a clear and luminous complexion. I rarely left home
without applying foundation.
But my acne only really affected the lower half of my face and neck. I had friends who
really suffered and their skin was gradually taking over their lives. One organised her
social diary around candle-lit venues, another had a pathological aversion to wearing red
incase it highlighted her condition. I remember my sister years ago joking that I looked
like Super Teds friend Spotty, but I cannot recall really worrying about my skin
until I
started my career in my early twenties.
Working in the image-obsessed fashion industry meant meeting new people regularly which
made me a lot more self-conscious. And so at 27, after enduring a decade with a rarely
pimple-free day, I resolved to conquer my blemishes. Over the years I must have popped
enough pills to fill a regional branch of Superdrug - from antibiotics to the
contraceptive pill Dianette - all to no avail, so I decided to explore the technological
route.
Spots are usually associated with adolescence, but about 20% of UK adults are believed to
suffer from late onset outbreaks, including 5% of all women in their forties. The NLite
laser emits a unique light which stimulates the natural repair mechanism of the skin and
kills spot-causing bacteria. It also increases the production of collagen, helping to
reduce any pitting and scarring.
I lay back on a bed while my skin was mapped with a pen-like device. It felt hot and
occasionally stung, but was mostly painless. Afterwards, mini blood-blister like bruises
appeared. I was reassured this was just the laser getting to work and they disappeared
after a couple of days. After just 2 treatments my spots began to subside, and 3 months
and 5 sessions on, my skin is now almost crystal clear.
Although expensive (sessions start at around £100), NLite is by far the most effective
treatment I have had. And for a clear complexion it has been worth every penny.
The Private Clinic recommends a course of 4 treatments combined with 2 chemical peels, but
it ultimately depends on skin type.
