DENSO VOID FILLER HELPS PROTECT LATEST MEDWAY BRIDGE Denso Void filler has been used to play its part in the anti-corrosion protection of the prestreesed stay cables that support the bridge, which were installed by specialist sub-contractors Freyssinet. The 96 prestressed cables, with a maximum length of 148m, are pregrouted and Fressinet specified Denso Void Filler to provide long life protection to the end caps. Denso Void Filler is a petrolatum compound which contains additives to displace moisture and inhibit corrosion. It can be injected cold or hot, if required, from a heated tank with its own pumping system specifically designed by our in-house engineering division for this application. Denso Tape was also used on this Medway bridge for protection on the supporting Macalloy bars at the side of the bridge. |
DENSO PROTAL STANDS UP TO CANADIAN WINTERS The project called for five 36 inch diameter fresh air shafts to be bored vertically from the surface into the tunnel. These shafts will also provide equipment access and pump access for emergency evacuation. Denso North America Inc - Canada, a subsidiary of Winn & Coales International Ltd, was chosen to supply Protal 7250 and Protal 7125 epoxy based liquid coatings to all the exterior surfaces of the vertical steel pipes, each shaft covering distances of nearly 500ft vertically, linking to the horizontal tunnel beneath, each of the five shafts were spaced approximately 13 feet apart along a specific section of the tunnel. Each pipe section was coated in plant with protal 7250 and shipped to site where it was hoisted by crane and lowered into the shaft. Using a collar arrangement to prevent pipe length from slipping down the shaft, each hoisted pipe section was welded in place and lowered into the ground. The girth weld area was brush coated with Protal 7125 and the entire process was repeated until all the sections were finished. The vertical shaft work was completed in the winter months at sub-zero temperatures, hence the use of Protal 7125 which is specially formulated to cure at temperature down to -20°C. SEASHELD PROTECTION ON NEW CLYDE BERTHING STRUCTURES SeaShield 2000FD System was specified by consultants Arch Henderson LLP to give additional protection to a number of legs on the new berthing structures constructed by George Leslie Ltd for Western Ferries (Clyde) Ltd at McInroy's point, Gourock and at Hunter's Quay, Dunoon. The scheme is part of an upgrade by Western Ferries to the vessel loading facilities at their terminal sites on the Firth of Clyde. The berthing structures interface the vessels with floating linkspans that move up and down with the tide, thereby facilitating traffic movement on and off the ferries. The construction and assembly of the tubular pile legs resulted in exposed areas within the tidal zone that did not receive adequate protective coating. The SeaShield System was specified by Arch Henderson to overcome this problem. SeaShield 2000FD was installed by Clyde Commercial Diving Ltd, beginning with application of Denso Paste S105, Denso Marine Piling Tape and then the HDPE Jackets which were put into position with stainless steel fixings. Denso Marine piling tape, a cold applied petrolatum-based tape for application under water, is the primary anti-corrosion protection in the SeaShield System with a proven 35- year track record. The Jackets will also give abrasion protection for the Tape system. Click here for more information on SeaShield 2000FD System. |
DENSO ULTRASEAL AIDS FORTH ROAD BRIDGE DEHUMIDIFICATION SYSTEM As part of a £7.8m project to install a dehumidication system to protect the main cables from corroding on the Forth Road Bridge, contractors C. Spencer Ltd are applying Denso Tape and Denso Ultraseal AL Tape to protect the hanger cables at the cable bands. The work is not expected to be completed until early next year. Dehumidification systems have previously been installed as a preventative measure against moisture forming inside the main cables on a new bridge in Japan and on the new Oresund bridge that connects Sweden and Denmark. In its first use in Britain on the Forth Road Bridge is to dry out the inner surfaces of the wire strands that make up the main cable (this made up of 11,618 separate strands), thus removing one of the requirements for corrosion to take place. The consulting engineers for this innovative project are Faber Maunsell, who expect a long protective life for the system. Denso Ultraseal AL Tape is a cold applied self-adhesive tape with a weather und ultra violet resistant aluminium backing. It was specifically developed for the long term protection of above ground pipework and structural steel. Its composition is a high melting point polymer bitumen adhesive to a 40 micron aluminum/polyester laminate with grey weatherproof lacquer finnish. DENSO PROTECTION FOR HISTORIC CRANE A key feature of the Llechwedd Exchange Sidings industrial archaeological site on the A470 Improvement scheme near Blaenau Ffestiniog is a crane that first saw service in the late 1800s loading slate from the nearby quarries on to railway trucks. The site, which is designated as an area of Special Archaeological Importance has been the subject of a design and build scheme, with Giffords being the designer for the original contractors, Alfred McAlpine, who are now part of Carillion Plc. Giffords designed a foundation for the original pillar of the Llechwedd crane to go in its new location. The pillar is the original 500mm diameter casting, which has been protected from corrosion with Winn & Coales Denso Paste, followed by Denso Tape, before being sunk 2.5 metres into the ground. Denso Tape is a non-woven synthetic fibre fabric impregnated and coated with an adhesive compound based on Petrolatum. In its former days the crane would load the slate that came down from the quarries on narrow quarry wagons to standard gauge rail wagons. Those going north to Llandudno would go through a one and a half miles tunnel, which was then the longest in Britain. Another rail line would take the slate down to Portmadog.
