History of Reiki
Reiki (pronounced Ray-key) is a Japanese word meaning Universal Life Energy, an energy which is all around us and found in all things. The Usui System of Reiki Healing or Usui Shiki Ryoho applies this energy through gentle touch for the purpose of healing.
Reiki was rediscovered in Japan in the late 1800’s by Dr Mikao Usui in some Sanskrit writings that are over 2,500 years old. Dr Usui was inspired to develop this healing system from these ancient teachings after many years of study, research and meditation. Dr Usui spent many weeks meditating until he found a way to channel this energy and pass it onto others. He spent the rest of his life practising and teaching Reiki.
Reiki was brought to the West in the late 1930’s by Hawayo Takata, a Japanese American living in Hawaii. Her granddaughter, Phyllis Lei Furumoto now carries on her work. Reiki is practiced in every country of the world. There is no belief system attached to Reiki so anyone can receive or learn to give a Reiki treatment, the only prerequisite is the desire to be healed or for change.
