A former Olympic hockey player has embraced the exciting new concept of active retirement, reserving a two-bedroom apartment at Audley Court’s Flete House development in Devon.
Peter Rees-Smith, 79, represented England between 1950 and 1957 and now he and his partner, Judy Hill, 62, are embarking on another adventure, relocating from Worcestershire to Devon.
The couple were holidaying in their favourite location of Sidmouth when they spotted an advert for the retirement village and instantly fell in love with the development when they visited.
Peter comments: “We currently live in a large house in Worcestershire, which has a considerable garden. While we adore the property, it requires a lot of work to keep it in order which, as we get older, is becoming less and less appealing. Our new two-bedroom apartment at Flete House has everything we require and also offers fantastic facilities such as the snooker room and library and on-site restaurant as well as enabling us to live fully independently if we wish.
“We have been won over by the ambiance and atmosphere of the retirement village, not to mention the existing residents, who have already made us feel part of the community. Flete House will provide us with an idyllic country retreat and is also in close proximity to the coast. There is a tennis court attached and two golf courses within easy reach.”
It’s not hard to see why Peter and Judy fell in love with Flete House. A Grade one listed mansion in the beautiful South Hams area of Devon, the house is set in over 12 acres of grounds on an estate once owned by the banking Mildmay family. In the 1870s the house was restored by the famous Victorian architect Norman Shaw, incorporating some of the original Tudor and Jaobean features. It now offers 23 apartments in the house, with a further seven situated in the stunning stable courtyard.
