Apologies
from PB, PK and JT.
Our
esteemed guests for the day were C Bantock, Leigh Brand and Addington members
Russ and Steve.
“Spring
is here at last,
Weary Winter’s past
Now all the birdies are singing
With all the love that they’re bringing.”
ANON
Ah,
isn’t that nice. To be honest, I thought it complete bilge and twaddle but
‘tweet-tweet’ Davies begged me to put it in. Well, I had hoped Nick ‘the bard’
Mukherjee might have been tempted to pen something but he is still suffering
from writer’s block so I have been asked by the one who cannot be refused, our
current Red Jacket, to contribute cock and cobblers for the Society’s records.
My
recollection has been dimmed by time and frankly having played poorly I have
consigned much to the recycling bin of my memory. I can recall that once again
Paul East was the consummate host and organized a great day with a turn-out of
13 no less, a gorgeous Spring morn and plenty of goodwill and banter. On behalf
of all in the Society may I lead the cheers of ‘HOORAH’ x 3 + 1 for luck! Not
only that but he cleverly set a trap for his professional when organizing
payment of the green fees. So befuddled was the poor benighted pro that he had
some of us stand on one side of the shop those who had been signed in by
members, then he had to take account of the 2 captains who claimed courtesy of
the course. Paul then put a bit of spin on the equation with a wad of vouchers
for half-price buggies and Mike was eager to play his trump card with his
County card!! The look on the face of the poor pro was a sight I won’t forget
as he could charge no more than £15 each when a normal green fee would have
been 3 times that plus a whole lot more for the buggies. In these financially
challenged times, to play Addy in top condition for £15 was manna from the
golfing Gods .
And so
to the Spring Cup. We started as ever with our customary tea served in a half
pint glass and a fine Full English. Then on to the 1st where we bubbled
together like schoolboys. The Spring Cup with the Masters heralds the time of
year when we shed a layer of protective clothing, when we swing more freely and
when the game for many of us starts in earnest. A brief ceremony was observed
as the Pink Beret #2 was produced once again thanks to eBay (the first still
languishes under PB’s bed). It was destined for a certain Mr Mukherjee for
services above and beyond the call of buffoonish duty in taking 4 or 5 attempts
at organizing the event. But before the words were out of my mouth, PE caught
my eye and took the beret claiming culpability. Talk about a guilty conscience.
Nick shrugged it off as he replied in the way only he knows by birdying the
first - HOORAH you stout yeoman.
The
actual ins and outs, thrusts and parries of the tourney have been lost in the
mists of time but thankfully we have Stato’s spreadsheet which tells no lies. So
it was Russ who had the best front 9 with19pts whilst Phil Mann and HO shared
the honours and wonga for the best back 9 with 19pts. Overall the winner was
Russell – congrats - you really know your course. A picture of the bandit can
be found on the website and with it comes a financial health warning: ‘DO NOT
ON ANY ACCOUNT PLAY THIS MAN FOR MONEY!’ You have been warned. But who took the
crystal ball that is the Spring Cup?…step up our very own Red Jacketted one,
Harvey Osler Esq. Congrats and well done, despite nursing a popped rib – or
perhaps that helped keep his over-expansive swing in check! Another fine effort with a gross 80 on one
of the toughest courses we play. Even edging ahead our resident member and host
for the day, Easto by 1 stroke. So another of the society’s relics is
squirreled away not see the light of day in the lawyer’s lair in deepest
darkest Hurstpierpoint. For the record HO also took the par 3 comp with a
creditable 2 over inc. a birdie on the tough 3rd.
On a
personal note, I would like to thank Alan Fry for once again keeping me amused
on a trying day. When the going gets tough Alan digs deep into his repertoire
of gags and witticisms. I also offer my humble apologies to Alan, Andy Boyle
and Mike D. for my display of petulance which would have made a schoolboy
blush. I have no excuse other than wanting to play a lovely course so well
especially after having posted a personal best at Mannings the previous week.
Somewhere between our expectations and reality lies the truth and sometimes
that is a most unpalatable truth.
Moving
on swiftly, there is the matter of the birdie pot. NM and PE had a birdie
apiece, HO and Steve got 2 each whilst fittingly the winner of the day, Russ
bagged 3. How did he do that on those treacherous greens?
After a
quick beer it was back to Horsham for a curry and a few jokes from PM.
Over to
Stato for the nitty gritty. There are also some photos of the event on snapfish
Various
photos of this outing can be found here. Note from HO – the awesome par three 12th
hole was supplemented by a visit from a four legged furry friend who was not in
the least bit shy of following us for a while to see if we had any tasty
snacks! A couple of photos confirm!
