For the first time since records began,
our esteemed co-founder, golf buff and all round general egg-head, DA was
unable to attend this outing due to personal circumstances, and so in his and
others’ absence, a much diminished band of brothers paid a return visit to the
Dale Hill GC.
After some haggling in the pro’s shop
by our two resident captains MD and AB, and after tendering our free round for
4 players voucher (won at Littlehampton 2008), and after flashing the captain’s
cards, we all managed to secure a completely free round with buggies thrown in
... and so Dale Hill commended itself from the off. After serving up full
golfing breakfast fayre, it showed off its beauty and bright breezy weather.
We wondered if we had bitten off more
than we could chew as we stood on the white 1st tee box with a full
602 yards into a stiff wind, but this honourable Society does not pander to
wimps and we set off, HO and NM leading the way with MD, AB and guest Dennis
hard on their heels.
In the front group, like a snake
winding up its coils, NM started slowly before unleashing his whippy best; a
few leaked shots on the first four holes wee followed by 9 points on the next 5
holes with a similar story on the back 9, and just 25 points overall. HO struck
the ball solidly from tee to green, but met disaster on the greens with 40
putts – despite a chip in on the first – including two ignominious 4 putts.
No such problem for Iron Mike in the
second group; after starting with a par on the immense first, just one blemish
on his front 9 left him on 16 points but a stunning 21 points on the back 9
gave him a 37 point tally on back tees on a tough course and in tough
conditions. AB came in with 27 points and our guest Dennis with 15, leaving MD
a clear winner, breaking his Hoorah virginity and taking a lead in the HOOM
itself.
And so fittingly, HO later presented MD
with the Hulking Green Gauntlet which had been acquired with some prescience by
DA.
