An Account of the
Auditor
Well, the motley
crew met for their second outing and all proceeded to plan, save for the sad
withdrawals of the Count, the Guerilla and by dint of a late ear infection, the
in form Wentworth Warrior - NM. We were joined though by Mike “Handcrusher” Davis
and once again by NOSLER by whose kind invitation we were back to worry the
resident deer. As can be seen from the photo album on Snapfish there were some
doe-eyed beauties and I invite the bambi-lovers amongst us to chose your
favourite.
Photos have kindly
been posted by DA for your viewing pleasure at our Snapfish site. Follow the
link here
All arrived in good
time to warm-up and scoff Panini’s before the off (see Mr Davis’ photo in
particular). In the time-honoured tradition of an F. A. cup draw Nosler plunged
his hand into the furry ball bag of destiny to select playing companions. His
gurneying face resembled Padraig Harrington as the sacred scrotum chose HO and
DA to play with MD in one group and the 2 Pauls plus Nosler in t’other.
Let the balance
sheet show that the born again Auditor (with new Floydian logo) flourished on
the close-cropped ,rough-free course and gave good account of himself on the
tricky greens (although it was his bro who was Boss of the Moss with an
outstanding 28 putts).
Mike and I tried to
grab hold of his coat tails but at every hole he outplayed us. His drives were
long and generally accurate whilst his approach shots where there or
thereabouts. He came unstuck a little on the fourth where his drive plugged in
the semi-rough; he had no other option to hack out. The next hole, a great
uphill par 3, saw a miraculous recovery after he had foozled his tee shot. Up the
hill his ball scuttled then back down it came to rest tight against a thick
clump of coarse grass. Despite not seeing the back of the ball he smashed down
and up the ball shot 70 yds to finish 5 feet from the pin. The putt found the
bottom of the hole for a remarkable par.
More was to come
with the most amazing example of shot-making as HO found himself behind trees
on the dogleg 11th, with 210 yards or possibly more to go. Eschewing the mere
mortal alternative of chipping out clear of the trees and taking one’s
medicine, out came the driver which he hit low and with cut spin. The ball flew
out from behind the tree, limbo-danced under the affronting tree branches,
soared then as it lost speed veered as if by remote control 50 yds in the air
before running onto the green to the startled surprise of Easto, Barnes and
Nick – and two putts for a par 4 thank you very much. This ranks with the
Barnesy 5 iron bent round trees onto the 13th at Copthorne. To think of the
shot is one thing but to have the balls to play it in a comp. is a totally
different thing altogether. It showed more imagination than any Auditor I’ve
ever encountered. All hail the Auditor!
The rest of the
round continued with HO in control whilst the course got the better of poor
Mike who had particular problems nipping the ball off the tight lies around the
greens. However, he did hole out from 40’ or more on the 1st to save a bogey.
Harvey had a chance of birdie on the 17th but these greens are tough to read .
Nevertheless the hip flask came out to celebrate a solid round with the
occasional flash of book-keeping wizardry.
Afterwards, we were denied our customary game of snooker but partook of delicious Indian comestibles at the Raj Osler which I highly recommend.

Next stop The
Addington for the Spring Cup on Tuesday 15th April. Don’t forget to bring the
cup, Barnesy.
