Date:              7 July 2005

Present:        HO, PB, DA, NM

Venue:          East Sussex (West)

General

This one seemed to come round hard on the heels of the Hever outing, due to holiday commitments forcing an early meet, but the Society is pleased to record that the month’s organiser (NM) managed to juggle dates around to accommodate PB and others.

Once again the buffoon-of-the-month award was decided before a ball had been struck; this time it was DA who attended the tour meeting via Crowborough, despite NM’s clear email of 4th July. Congratulations go to DA for breaking your duck in this particular competition!

After dubious early morning conditions including some drizzle, a stop-off at the half way hut for a bacon sarnie saw a change in the weather and fair conditions for the closing 9 holes. There was a general consensus that the course was stunning, in great condition, and worth a repeat visit. The members also used buggies for the first time in its short but eventful history.

And, for the first time, all four members were in contention for a fair while, but a few wayward shots from PB from the 8th onwards, and a little ill-fortune in finding fairway bunkers every other hole, and some missed putting opportunities by NM and DA saw a surprise return to the fore by HO, with a re-modelled swing, and the form he saves for Hoorah events; HO eventually ran away with 22 points on the front 9; an up and down from 200 yards, a chip-in, and a couple of closing pars secured the back 9 also; would the other members indulge him if he wallows in victory for a brief while before the new handicaps kick in to ensure that only the best form of his life is going to earn any more HOOM points in the months ahead!

PB was very much back in the mix, hitting the fairways regularly and maintaining his up and down stats; on this note, it has been suggested that, at least for the 2006 tour, DA will keep further stats (Fairways in Reg, Greens in Reg, Up and Downs, Sand Saves and Putting Stats) so that the members can analyse the respective strengths and weaknesses of their games in the dark weeks before Hoorah events. It will be particularly interesting for PB given the large numbers of bunkers hit on the back 9!

There were birdie possibilities from all four players throughout the round and a generally improved standard of golf on this fairly forgiving but nonetheless memorable course.

DA laid his par 3’s demons from Hever to rest by taking the prize in this month’s comp in the tightest competition yet.

It has been mentioned that PB omitted to putt with the president’s putter on the 18th hole, and the Society will need to consider the appropriate penalty to impose. Let DA be warned next month!
